Suboxone is the most difficult part of quitting an opiate addiction. Whether it involves codeine, fentanyl, Vicodin or heroin, the acute pain associated with the process is scary and painful. Many experts believe that the pain of opiate detox and the fear of opiate withdrawal are some of the greatest barriers to seeking opiate detox. It’s clear that many patients suffering from opiate withdrawal quit before they can be moved to a medication-assisted treatment program like Vivitrol.

What is the Opiate Detox Bridge Device NSS-2?

Many fear opiate detox and Suboxone detox stopping them from entering long-term recovery.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) President of the Midwest Chapter and board- certified addictionologist Arturo C. Taca Jr. is one of the innovative pioneers for the bridge device. The device was FDA approved for chiropractic care in 2014 and now the NSS-2 Bridge device has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for opiate withdraw. The pilot study in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse used drug and alcohol addiction outpatient treatment centers between June 2015 and July 2016. This study conclusively showed that we can treat opiate withdraw without pharmacology.

The Bridge Device Study Helps West Palm Beach

The study used eight intensive out-patient addiction treatment centers from 5 states. Each of the participating centers provided qualified physicians, stabilization teams, case managers, and counselors. Each individual participant received their own evaluation on their opiate use.  These out-patient addiction treatment centers provided data from individuals with the mean drug use of 70 months and 24 months of active opiate drug use.

This is not new technology, it has been around for decades. It has endless applications with more coming. In addition to opiate detox, this technology branches off into many areas and is currently FDA approved for back and knee pain, and major depressive disorders.

The Bridge Device NSS-2 Eliminates Opiate and Prescription Drug Withdrawal

The opiate and heroin epidemic has been fueled by overprescribing opiates by Doctors and pain clinics. Many don’t know how to stop using heroin or prescribe medications. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a technology that gets an individual through one stage of recovery.

However, they must be evaluated by a qualified physician. The bridge device is not a cure for addiction. It is a bridge to overcome obstacles to start the recovery journey. The bridge can get individuals from detox to treatment and medication-assisted treatment.

Medication-assisted treatment is becoming mainstream, especially for drug and alcohol addiction treatment centers. Insurance companies are starting to demand document progress showing improvement in the addiction treatment process. The medication-assisted treatment provides this, however, to get to the use of Vivitrol, an individual must be completely clean of all opiates.

Otherwise, the alternative is the use of Suboxone clinics and Doctors. Suboxone while effective in treating and saving lives, it is extremely difficult to come off of and stop using. Recovery is a life-long journey and all your treatment should be case managed. this should be done by a physician, qualified counselor and addiction professionals guiding your recovery journey.

This is also being used by many sober homes West Palm Beach due to its outpatient setting. It drastically reduces the withdrawal process to 5 days or less and usually works within 10 minutes of installation. Its main purpose is to quickly and painlessly reduce the pain associated with acute opiate withdrawal.

No More Painful Opiate Detox

The withdrawal from prescription drugs, opiates and heroin are very intense and painful. The physical detox can take days or weeks to complete. Due to the pain and intense discomfort associated with opiate withdrawal, it is very difficult to get patients to the next step in the recovery process which is the utilization of the opioid antagonist naltrexone.  The NSS-2 Bridge Device is a revolutionary game changer in that it completely changes the dynamics of the withdrawal process from opiates such as heroin and prescription pain medication.

The Bridge Device opiate detox West Palm Beach is just that, a bridge from a virtually painless detox to addiction treatment. It allows a comfortable transition that is non-narcotic, non-evasive and does not use any medications. There are many options after the five-day out-patient treatment including not needing Suboxone. Patients can transition to naltrexone or Vivitrol.

Again, it must be mentioned that this FDA approved device is a virtually painless procedure with minimal side effects. The safe auricular nerve field simulator has applications beyond opiate addiction treatment and several other medical patents are pending. The device sends painless neurological signals for over 98 hours in an approximately five day period.

You can only get the the the Bridge Device NSS-2  by prescription from a qualified physician, drug, and alcohol addiction treatment center, or opiate detox center. One provider is located in Arizona. It ingeniously takes advantage of 4 important cranial nerves (5, 7, 9 and 10) can be found by the ear. These nerves are directly responsible for sending and receiving pain signals to and from the brain.

Patient Brokering Top 5 Legal Things Nationally

Patient Brokering is affecting drug and treatment center owners, detox center owners, sober home operators, and all addiction professionals. This hurricane hit Florida in full force and is becoming a category 5 in California with other states following soon. Florida was irresponsibly labeled by the media with the “Florida shuffle”. Now, California is being labeled the “rehab Riveria”.  California drug rehabilitation centers need to be prepared because this irresponsible journalism will deter many from attending treatment there. Florida has been experiencing this for over a year with many ethical operators closing their doors.

What is Patient Brokering for Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment Centers?

Patient brokering is when individuals or companies lure in potential treatment center clients for monetary compensation. This compensation can be from $500-$5,000 per individual. Individuals with good insurance can potentially be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Patient brokering also occurs when drug rehabilitation centers lure in clients with discounts and incentives. The boots on the ground strategy of buying and selling of clients by unethical drug and alcohol addiction treatment centers are happening all across the nation.

The Florida law pertaining to patient brokering for addiction treatment centers and sober homes in under Chapter 817.505. This hurricane is directed towards patient brokers, drug dealers, prescribing doctors, and hospitals (collection of OD data). However, it has drastically affected many addiction treatment centers in South Florida. It requires them to operate quite differently facing severe penalties, felony charges, and jail time. The old “Laissez-faire” operating mentality is gone and being replaced because of abuse, irresponsibility, and the loss of many lives. The patient brokering laws passed in Florida affect the nation. All addiction professionals must be aware of the new Florida patient brokering laws as of July 1, 2017.

BHNR Educates on Ethical Business Practices Fighting Patient Brokering

This is the first time our industry we have regulations designed to get rid of the large underground network of patient brokers. The new laws are ultimately designed to address the heroin epidemic and save lives. For right now they are forced on drug rehabs West Palm Beach. However, they are quickly spreading across the nation with California drug rehabs next. If you do not completely understand all the legislation that has come and is coming you will not be operating soon.

At Behavioral Health Network Resources October 27, 2016 event where we were honored to have the Riviera Beach Civil Drug Court. We raised over $400,000 worth of treatment scholarships (services not monies). At that event, we said there was a hurricane coming to South Florida. We were preparing the addiction professionals for the upcoming changes. We host addiction conferences (14 events total) educating Executives on the ethical business side of addiction. Behavioral Health Network Resources knew it was their responsibility to fight against patient brokering. To use our loud voice in the professional community, and on social media educating on these complex changes.

Patient Brokering Florida Understanding the Landscape

Early in 2017, we were attending the Sober Homes Task Force and the Palm Beach County Substance Awareness Coalition (PBCSAC) meetings. We did this to try and understand the legislative process and the changes that are coming from some of the industry’s addiction professionals. We sat quietly, listening, getting educated, and took in all the information that we could to get an understanding to educate the professional community and the Executives attending our events.

We sat in meetings and tried to get an understanding on these changes. We noticed that there are only about 40-50 organizations participating with these organizations. These organizations have formed the landscape for the legislative changes. Any organization that has not been present or decided not to participate could have helped mold the new regulated addiction treatment industry.

Educating the Behavioral Health Industry for Clarity

In our current journey, there are still areas where we are confused. The legal jargon that the laws and bills are written can be extremely difficult to understand. Trying to completely understand some areas where there are loopholes. Many of these changes affect drug rehab SEO marketing on the web and referrals to and from addiction treatment centers. We have spoken with many operators and addiction professionals. Many thought the changes would never happen. Almost all are relying on the interpretation of their legal counsel, or even worse an interpretation from their peers. We have also seen on social media the same type of reaction with many complaining, but few get involved.

Patient Brokering Laws in Florida

The current Florida law that was passed on July 1, 2017 (HB 807, SB 788) covers many different areas. Below these are broken down into simplistic terms:

Drug Rehab Marketing: Drug treatment center marketers will need to be licensed by the state’s Division of Consumer Services. Deceiving, lying, or misleading about treatment services offered, amenities and the high jacking of 800 numbers will be a first-degree misdemeanor. We have been educating centers of the 800-number high jacking using our national social media audience, and as a personality on the national Radio Raw Show.

HB 807 (SB 788) — Marketers will now have to be licensed and there are stiff penalties and fines for patient brokering. and centers will be held legally liable for deceptive marketing practices. It makes DCF the “big brother” and enforcer of the industry. You can find more information by reading “Top Five Criteria Sober Living West Palm Beach

SB 886 (HB 791) — Protects individuals that have been Marchman Acted by making their court records confidential.

Sponsors: Sen. Bobby Powell, D-West Palm Beach; Rep. Joseph Abruzzo, D-Boca Raton.

Patient Brokering Arrests Florida Legal Issues

Criminal Penalties: Statewide you can be investigated and prosecuted for patient brokering. The prosecution could result in a felony and the fines increase with the number of patients brokered. Brokering more than 20 patients will be a first-degree felony and a whopping fine of $500,000.

Patient Brokering and DCF

DCF’s Role (Department of Children and Families): It will now cost much more to license a facility and the penalty for operating without a license is a third-degree felony with a maximum 5 years in jail. DCF significantly increased licensing fees. Operating without a license becomes a third-degree felony, carrying a maximum five-year prison sentence. DCF now has new rules including; clinical, treatment best-practices, operating standards, levels of qualifications for addiction professionals and the number of staff that will be required to operate. DCF will is also allowed to visit your center anytime without notice and inspect all of the above.

As a treatment center owner, detox center owner, sober living owner and all addiction professionals you need to completely understand the 5 bills that have passed below;

Patient Brokering Florida Sets the Regulation Pace for the Nation

While Florida has one of the worst reputations for addiction treatment in the US, we must realize that Florida is also one of the most popular destinations for treatment and one of the nation’s largest providers of treatment. The large underground patient brokering network is national and many other states have the same issues as Florida. However, the spotlight has been on South Florida. The work that has been done, and will be done, is setting a precedent to be followed nationally. California drug rehabs are now experiencing new patient brokering laws on September 27, 2018. With the heroin epidemic killing more than 150 per day, many other states will be following soon.

We would love to hear your thoughts on the current situation on new laws affecting the heroin epidemic. Leave your comments below.

Press Release; Governor Scott Declares Opioid Public Health Emergency

Here is Gov. Scott’s Press Release Declaring Statewide Public Health Emergency for Opioid Epidemic

Tallahassee, Fla. — Today, following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declaring a national opioid epidemic, Governor Rick Scott signed Executive Order 17-146 directing a Public Health Emergency across the state. By signing the Emergency Order, it will allow the state to immediately draw down more than $27 million in federal grant funding from the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Opioid State Targeted Response Grant which was awarded to Florida on April 21 to provide prevention, treatment and recovery support services. Without the order, it would have taken months for the state to distribute these funds to local communities. In addition to declaring a Public Health Emergency, Surgeon General Dr. Celeste Philip will issue a standing order for Naloxone, an emergency treatment for opioid overdose. This will ensure first responders have immediate access to this lifesaving drug to respond to opioid overdoses.

Governor Scott said, “Today, I issued an executive order which allows the state to immediately draw down more than $27 million in federal grant funding which will immediately be distributed to communities across the state to deal with the opioid epidemic. HHS Secretary Dr. Tom Price awarded the Opioid State Targeted Response Grant to Florida and I want to thank the Trump Administration for their focus on this national epidemic. I have also directed State Surgeon General Dr. Celeste Philip to declare a Public Health Emergency and issue a standing order for Naloxone in response to the opioid epidemic in Florida.

“Last month, I directed the Department of Children and Families (DCF), the Department of Health (DOH) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to meet with communities in Palm Beach, Manatee, Duval, and Orange Counties to identify additional strategies to fight the rising opioid usage cases in Florida. They have gotten a lot of feedback this week and we will continue to look at additional ways we can fight this national epidemic which has taken the lives of many Floridians.

“I know firsthand how heartbreaking substance abuse can be to a family because it impacted my own family growing up. The individuals struggling with drug use are sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and friends and each tragic case leaves loved ones searching for answers and praying for help. Families across our nation are fighting the opioid epidemic and Florida is going to do everything possible to help our communities.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi said, “This declaration will help strengthen our continued efforts to combat the national opioid epidemic claiming lives in Florida by providing additional funding to secure prevention, treatment and recovery support services. I want to thank Governor Rick Scott for his continued partnership in combating drug abuse in our state; from shutting down pill mills to outlawing deadly synthetic drugs, Governor Scott has long supported efforts by my office and law enforcement to raise awareness, stop drug abuse and save lives.”

See the Executive Order and Public Health Emergency here.

Behavioral health thought leaders have been attending addiction conferences to get better educated on the drug rehab marketing changes. Other government leaders have been pushing legislation fighting the epidemic reducing the gray, illegal operating areas of treatment centers and sober living facilities. Dave Aronberg, Florida State Attorney, and Al Johnson, Asst. State Attorney have put an army of law enforcement in place closing down operators who are participating in illegal patient brokering and putting many lives in danger. They have also been the driving force for tighter laws by pursuing legislation that protects those seeking treatment, and those in treatment.

These key players fighting the epidemic are making changes to industry marketing and operating regulations with House Bill 807, and 65D30.
